| This is an ideal opportunity to break up the winter training and incorporate a solid block of training at the start of the year. The training will focus on endurance miles with particular emphasis on steady state riding. There will be some climbing training with the main criteria being on tempo or sub threshold work and gear selection.
Weekly mileage will be approximately 800km with some double training days.
The camp will incorporate the following areas:
- Training plan guidelines
- Bike fitting and position analysis
- Power analysis (athletes to bring own power measuring equipment)
- Bike etiquette and technique
- Introduction and maintenance of cross training (running and swimming)
The camp will involve steady rides, in the region of 26 – 32km/h average, so that individuals can work on:
- Bike skills
- Gear selection
- Cycling position in a group
- Feeding on the road
- Group riding
- Descending
- Climbing
- Bicycle control (riding with one hand, no hands etc)
Other aspects that we will cover will include:
- Basic training philosophy
- Strategies for riding long distance events (L’Etape, La Marmotte etc)

We will be situated about 3km from a swimming pool so we will also have the opportunity to incorporate some swimming coaching/training either as a form of cross training and/or to develop swimming technique.
Training camps can be a great way to significantly increase your training and rapidly push up your fitness levels. In addition to working on improving fitness, a camp led by experienced cyclists also provides the environment for individuals to spend time concentrating on improving skill, tactical awareness of bunch riding.
I always recommend athletes both reduce their training dramatically before and especially after the training camps to make sure that you are relatively well rested coming into the camp, and more importantly are able to recover from the increased training once you get back home and into regular life.
Remember that going to a training camp does not mean that you can train an unlimited amount — I typically limit the increase to a maximum of twice your average weekly volume. Even more important than the increased training is the ability to spend more time recovering, relaxing and sleeping; which will help you get the most from your training camp.
